Bluesky's Latest Updates: 3-Minute Videos & DM Filtering - What Are Your Thoughts?
-
Hey forum members!
I just came across an interesting article on The Verge about some significant updates to Bluesky that I thought would make for a good discussion here.
According to the article, Bluesky has just rolled out version 1.99 with two notable features:
- Extended video length - Videos can now be up to 3 minutes long (up from the previous 1-minute limit)
- Chat Requests filter - Similar to X's Message Requests, this feature helps manage DMs from people you don't know
The new Chat Requests feature appears as a banner at the top of your inbox, allowing you to approve or reject messages from unknown users. Interestingly, it seems Bluesky will also show you if the person trying to message you is followed by anyone in your network - a nice touch for determining credibility.
They've also simplified account muting, adding it directly to the three-dot menu beneath posts rather than requiring navigation to a user's profile.

Questions for discussion:
- Do you think 3 minutes is long enough for videos on Bluesky, or should they extend it further?
- How important is DM filtering for your social media experience?
- Will these updates make Bluesky more competitive with platforms like X and Threads?
- Are you currently using Bluesky, and if so, what's your experience been like?
Looking forward to your thoughts!

3 minutes is quite short, but remember many platforms used to have small limits on videos. Youtube used to have limits, so did TikTok so this isn't anything new for a upcoming platform. DM filtering is a must have feature for any social media platform. You'll get trolls or even spammers trying to contact you if you're content goes viral. With how many people have been moving over to BlueSky recently, I think these updates will help it in the long run for sure. I prefer BlueSky to other platforms because there's better moderation and generally people are nicer on BlueSky IMO.

I am not even using it. But if they want to get into video, I think short videos is better. That's because it is easy to create short videos, you do not have to spend a lot of time polishing videos. That's why Tiktok became the fastest platform to reach 1 billion users.

It provides an area for Bluesky to bring in new users that focus on video content for their social media promotion. You could have a company upload and promote their latest widget with a short video that would attract people to interact on their posts. Similar to how Xtwitter worked, flashy stimulation to corner reactions while keeping people engaged on the platform. The difference is that, Bluesky doesn't penalize you if you post a link to an outside website. Which in my opniion is a much better way to keep users to using your platform.
