When it comes to free forum software, which one would you use and recommend?

(assuming you're forced to use one)

For a free forum software I would use, and currently using NodeBB which is powering this forum. NodeBB is free and open source but if this wasn't available then, I would probably look into using SMF. It appears to be still under active development and is the most prevalent forum software still out there for free.

I'd recommend using Proboards, Forumotion or Jcink if you're going to use a free forum software.

@JoshB SMF is my personal favorite free forum script. At first I didn't really like the look and feel of NodeBB but it's been growing on me and so has Discourse. Soon I'm going to either move a phpBB forum over to NodeBB or Discourse I haven't decided which one yet. The plan was to move it over to vBulletin but the devs are taking too long to convert it... Jcink is a good free forum host, since they allow you to download a database backup of your forum.

I love the interface and it seems I'm going to delve into using it. But I'm curious, can I monetize it with AdSense?

@uptrend There is an adsense plugin that can be used, I don't have any experience using it though but it seems easy to add in your adsense info to get started.

I checked but it seems it require a credit card to set up a forum but I thought it was totally free. How do I navigate through this?

@JoshB I came to know about NodeBB recently. Before being a member on this site I have used it on one forum and I liked it. Is this beginner friendly? Does it have active community for support?

@DigitalNomad It actually does have a community for support and the members are quite friendly and helpful. The one issue many might come across, is the lower amount of plugins for the software. One thing I did was really look into what I had used before on other forum software and I found that I could drop almost all of the plugins I had used in the past and just go ahead with the vanilla style format of NodeBB.

NodeBB's community can be found at community.nodebb.com
