Lander, Wyoming. You wouldn’t think it, cause diving northwest in Wyoming always feels like going uphill, but it’s about 1,500 feet lower in elevation than Rawlins.

Along Highway 287 heading toward Lander, Wyoming, is Split Rock, another landmark on the Oregon Trail. Today there’s a parking area on a hill near the rock with picnic tables, bathrooms and historical information displays.

Rawlings also has a steam locomotive on display. Same type as in Laramie. There’s one on my return route in Douglas but the weather was bad and I wanted to minimize my stops.
