I think the number one thing I have learned from too many years in retail is that if being nice to assholes gets me what I want, then I will be nice to assholes.

"But Kate, some people don't deserve to be treated nicely"
Nobody gets what they deserve in this world and I'm neither in a position to know what anyone actually deserves nor to give it to them.

Sorry, I have hung out with my grandma twice this week and last week.
This is ultimately because my mother's ongoing quest to get passive-aggressive revenge for her shitty childhood through emotional neglect only results in grandma calling the EMT's for panic attacks when she can't get attention from mom.

I am trying to convince mom that regardless of what grandma "deserves" the treatment that gets results (not calling the goddamn EMT's every Monday night) is to be emotionally available and physically present at least once a week.

Mom: my childhood was awful! You can't expect me to want to hang out with my mother now!
Me: I know!
Me: your childhood was so awful you're convinced you did a good job with me!Mom: I did so much better than I got!
Me: here's the thing, grandma thinks that too! It's childhood trauma all the way down!
Mom: *hisses at me like an angry dinosaur*
Me: *hisses back because this is a longstanding bit we do*
My wife: what if we all had lunch?

I want to be very clear here that my grandma is widely despised by anyone younger than her and I do mean my boomer cousins, uncles, and aunts on this side all made cracks about her existing on spite at the last party I went to.
She watches nothing but Fox News and HGTV, she thinks ICE is good for America, Elon Musk is a misunderstood philanthropist, and she called a nurse practitioner a "DEI Hire" for suggesting that she's taking up a lot of hospital resources that she doesn't really need.
