It’s human nature to apply definitions and understandings to others so we can wrap our own heads around how to navigate our worlds. It’s instinctual.
But I think nowadays we’ve sacrificed the capacity for nuance and variation to gain personal comfort and security. Too many times, it has been demonstrated that extending trust has proven foolish. So it’s hard to deprogram that, and we’ve just plunged deeper and further into the extreme over time…
The absence of subtext and the artificial “character limits” that we’ve ingested over time since the advent of the internet leave little room for expressing complexity and degree. Now we all desire instantaneous definition, and expect others to self-identify who/what they are for our own safety. If we can’t get that, we judge and define them anyway.
I’m not trying to make excuses. I completely agree with you. I just wonder if it’s a symptom of something we’ve let insinuate into our lives and perspectives that we don’t even realize is there...
