@joshb Honestly, I don’t think Google does anything that isn’t about them making profit. And I don’t think they would be so interested in bifurcating the web with the Chromium crap they inflicted on all of us a couple years ago if it wasn’t going to pay off for them somehow…
So I’m left thinking that there must be some underlying catch we don’t know about. Google imploded their trustworthiness long ago and I’m not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt...

I agree completely and for a company that commands such a majority share of the internet, the decisions it makes effects so many businesses. There are a lot of small, independent sites who experienced a major drop of inbound traffic that equals to a massive loss of business.
With Google search we've already seen how absolutely garbage it is now with its focus on shoving ads and AI results into your search. You have to almost go to the second page in order to see your actual results of the search hich makes it all but useless.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Many small websites have faced unjustified penalties based on my observations in the past. The ability of Google to achieve fair playing field would mark a major achievement towards promoting online innovation and diversity.
