Specifically, there is no algorithm in mastodon or other fediverse clients to tell you who you might want to follow. That’s good - no rage bait or ads. But it can make for a boring experience if you don’t work it and find people to follow to populate your home timeline.
There are couple of accounts that try to recommend people based on topics periodically. I’ll see if I can dig them up for you later

If you want to follow an account from the site, copy-paste the address listed into the search box on Mastodon and its profile will appear on your server so you can follow it.

@NullNowhere @equilibrium I personally call it aggressively following. See someone that says something nice/interesting/etc FOLLOW. You can always unfollow. Follows snowball.
Not only follow, but BOOST. Liking/loving/favoriting is nice, but we have to BOOST so others can find folks.
But remember, we're a community. Not everyone will agree with absolutely everything. That's ok, that makes us human. Let's all talk to each other.

@FediFollows @equilibrium @NullNowhere @FediTips I've been on the fediverse for 6 or 7 years and FediFollows/FediTips is always friendly and is always trying to help folks find others to talk to or giving constant suggestions on how to have a better experience. Best person on the Fediverse imo.
