After #Fediforum I've really been thinking about the funding issue.

After #Fediforum I've really been thinking about the funding issue. And some folks mentioned libraries and communities. And sure enough @fedihost literally comes out with a video of it today.
This has to be the way. We need to learn to sell the social web. But not to the universe. But to small communities.
My local dojo has 200 kids. They'd LOVE to teach kids social media in a protected environment! Now they CAN!

1/?For like $40/ month they can give their students a moderated social media. All the kids are friends so they can converse together. If they don't want to connect to broader Fediverse, don't. But they'll still make connections with those they trust. We can't moderate the world and expect everyone to be happy. Local communities already moderate themselves. And they know each other. Best behavior!

2/?What if we go further? Libraries are a central hub. Bookwyrm can help you track your books and talk with your friends. You can have your I'd there and if you move take your I'd to your new library and oh yeah they're connected because they're all libraries! It's a web of trust.

3/?And we have the clients that can log into many places. Yeah its a pain, but then there's an incentive for the local business to federate with the library. Easy of use for everyone and we trust the library. What about churches?
I think we need to stop thinking like Big Tech and start thinking like the small communities we are.

4/?Strong small communities are what make this place great. We have to lean into that, but we also have to become sales representatives. I've already started asking around to my friends and families about local communities. Everyone seems to love this idea.
What communities can you think of that might want their own protected, local, safe, social media? -
