Phenomenal.
Cahill has a way with contrasting epic moments against deeply intimate character-driven moments. For all the old school epic fantasy tropes that he uses, the frames them in a way that fleshes them out and makes them endearing and fun.
He’s got a way with plot twists that are amazing, and his world building is quite deep, logical, and fascinating. Every time you think he can’t take it further he makes it even richer and illuminates a new corner of an entirely new direction.
But the heart of his talent is in his finely wrought characters. It’s a huge cast, and they’re all unique and compelling. He can make your heart soar and then drive you to tears.
I highly recommend his series. It was worth it to me, and I’m happy I found him. He’s great guy on a personal level, too, and deserves the success he’s getting.
And dragons. A brilliant take on them.

@Edelruth l personally have a thing for Sanderson, Rothfuss, Scalzi, Butcher… Cahill seems to press a lot of those buttons for me, and I deeply enjoy his work.
It’s not some ground-breaking genre-bending reinvention of epic fantasy. It’s just good storytelling. His characters start as stereotypes in a lot of ways and the plot clearly hits a lot of tropes, but he plays on that and despite them seeming to be cookie-cutter replications at first they quickly spin into rich, unique, endearingly lovable figures in their own right.
And Cahill also seems like a genuinely nice guy, so that predispositions me to liking his efforts. He knows he’s not some talented prodigy—he just works really hard.
I like the whole package. I highly recommend indulging.
And the audiobooks—oh, my goodness Derrick Perkins is a delight!! SUCH a good performer! Big big thumbs up!

@Edelruth Oh, and Cahill is also Irish! I think he lives in New Zealand now?
