Gaming on Linux
-
I know that Linux has come a long way in regards to the gaming side of things. I've gone back and forth on whether to fully go in on the Linux as a daily driver for my gaming computer but, there were always something that got in the way of it.
Recently I tried out the latest edition of Fedora and as is always the case, speed bumps presented themselves constantly. Mainly was in getting Steam to work and when I did get it working, the games either didn't work at all or they experienced crashes and freezes. Trying out a different version of Fedora 42 came to a halt when I couldn't even get past the setup section. Picking your timezone resulted in it crashing and having to hard reset the computer to try and get past this issue didn't fix the problem. I had to install the previous version and do the upgrade through that.
Ultimately I got things working and it was time to install a game that I needed as it is the backbone to one of the podcasts I'm a part of, Secret World Legends. Remembering in that I had to go through some workarounds last year but, forgetting what that process was. I went in search of that old video I have on the YouTube channel. Huzzah, SWL was up and running as previously to all this, it was producing a staggering 1 frame per second and essentially was an unplayable mess. Now though, the chat window and even the menu didn't have their overlay or art or whatever it was, was missing.
It was at this time, which happened to be 1 in the morning and I had been at this for several hours, that it had occurred to me that perhaps Linux in its current state. Even though that state was miles ahead of what it was not that long ago. Is not something I could effectively work with in a capacity of being a content creator. I really love Linux and hold it above the state of Windows but, I'm looking for an operating system that has a better reliability on par to that of Windows in running games. I get asked if the game I'm playing is on Linux and I have to say no, The experience of having to go through the steps of trying to get a gamete run and run at a level that is good enough, is sometimes exhausting. For my workflow I can't afford to spend at least an hour prior or even during a live stream trying to get a game to run under Linux when I know I can reboot over into Windows and press play and be up and running with no problem.
Maybe in a future date this story will be much different but, for now I have to trust and live within a Windows world. As a wise man once said
